EXPLORE AND EXPERIENCE

Start at the Puymin Roman Site, where you experience the authentic ancient Roman city.   Continue to the archaeological museum, complete with video-guide,  and then stroll on to the Roman Theatre.  This was the first monument revealed by Canon Sautel in 1907.  Extensively restored, it is currently used for the "Vaison Danses" festival as well as for concerts and variety shows.

"La Villassecontains public baths and exceptional private homes.  For example, "The House of the Silver Bust" has a surface area of over 5000 square meters, and was built according the same principles used in Pompeii.

Notre-Dame de Nazareth dates from the 11th Century and is a beautiful example of Provençal Romanesque architecture.  Look for the symbols of the 4 Evangelists:  the angel of Matthew, the bull of Luke, the eagle of John and the lion of Mark.

The Tuesday Market in Vaison-la-Romaine dates back from 1483 - it is one of the oldest and largest markets in Provence, and is not to be missed.   In addition to the usual fresh fruits and vegetables, you can also find soaps, clothing, baskets, leather goods, and one-of-a-kind antiques.   (We even found Tintin lurking around)  Get there early to find parking, and leave plenty of time to meander down each street.  Don't forget your camera!
