EXPLORE AND EXPERIENCE

The first thing to see of course is the castle -  the first Renaissance Château in Provence.  It is simply spectacular, set up on the hill, with views over the village.  The castle is open every day except for Christmas and New Years.  It has a large collection of furnishings, art and musical instruments from the 16th to 19th centuries.

Writers Albert CAMUS (1913-1960) and Henri BOSCO (1888-1976) both lived and are buried in Lourmarin.  Inquire about the "literary stroll"  at the Office de Tourisme.

Again, you don't need a long sight-seeing agenda here.  Lourmarin is a place to stroll and discover, simply for the enjoyment of the experience.  The last time I was there, we discovered an impromptu vintage car parade passing by.

The shops you find here are not going to sell you touristy trinkets you won't find endearing once you get home.  There are high quality, unique, beautiful products, so yes, you need to go into every boutique!

 Market Day is Friday.

Lourmarin is CHARM.  That's it. Absolutely charming.  Each cobblestone street, each boutique, even the ice cream shop is adorable.  If you are looking for an upscale, classy village, I believe Lourmarin fits the bill.  Classified as one of the "Most Beautiful Villages", I have to say I am not alone! I don't need an agenda here, just to wander and appreciate.

STAY AND SAVOR

There are plenty of amazing restaurants in Lourmarin.  Of course half of the fun is strolling, finding a spot that looks inviting and stopping for a drink or meal.

If you like more of a plan, here are some recommendations:

Auberge la Feniere - This restaurant earned a Michelin start in 1995.  Based on Mediterranean cuisine, this family restaurant is sure to please everyone, offering a gluten-free menu as well.

Le Moulin de Lourmarin has charm and character, and a fixed-price menu for $40.  If you find yourself in a food-coma, you can always stay at the hotel as well!

Hotel Bastide de Lourmarin **** Cozy rooms, each one with a different decor - luxurious and special.  Bonne nuit
